Chanting Mantras like Om / Mahamrityunjaya to help awaken Kundalini

Mantra Om

A Mantra is a Powerful word or phrase, sound, vibration or set of syllables capable of bringing divine blessing in some form. The mantra Om (aum) or others like Mahamrityunjaya mantras are vibrational methods of liberation. A mantra is a devotional sound for meditation & deep concentration. Often the mantra comes from a living guru so it’s empowered to give the student some help in their spiritual practice.

Mantras are used to

  • protect our spiritual journey (especially the inward path during inner meditation)
  • to purify our space from negativity (including invisible entities such as astral beings)
  • to help control the mind and thus improve concentration
  • as a form of recognition that we belong to a certain guru and method
  • to bring a feeling of peace and solace into our hearts
  • to uplift us, at time allowing us to enter a trance state or samadhi
  • and many other reasons.

Two students may recite the same mantra but they may have different effects based on who taught the student and the faith and consciousness of the student. The power of the guru and sincerity makes all the difference.
Some of the most common or popular mantras include the following (note: these mp3 tracks can also be used to help meditation)

  • Om (Aum) – the primaeval sound of the universe. The root of all sounds. The vibration from whence came creation.

  • Om Mani Padme Hum (includes the Mantra of Avalokiteshvara) – The Mani mantra is the most widely used of all Buddhist mantras, and open to anyone who feels inspired to practice it — it does not require prior initiation. It promotes a state of compassion in the sayer or listener. One of the simple yet profound teachings which accompanies this mantra is the concept that when the mind and heart become united, anything is possible. The implications of this simple thought are staggering. If you want to change the world for the better, this mantra should be in your spiritual toolbox.
  • Mul Mantra is the root of all mantras. It means, “The creator of all is One. Truth is His Name. He does everything, fearless, without anger, undying, unborn, self-realized, realized thru Guru’s Grace, Meditate: He was true in the beginning, true thru all the ages, true even now. Nanak shall ever be true.”

The Mahamrityunjaya Mantra (also known as the Tryambakam or great death-conquering mantra) is one of the most powerful ancient mantras. Mahamrityunjaya is a call for enlightenment by purifying the souls karma at a deep level. In Hindi it reads like this

“Om Tryambakam Yajamahe Sugandhim Pushtivardhanam Urvarukamiva Bandhanan Mrityor Mukshiya Maamritat”

The English translation is :

“We Meditate on the Three-eyed reality Which permeates and nourishes all like a fragrance. May we be liberated from death for the sake of immortality, Even as the cucumber is severed from bondage to the creeper.”
