Laughter Yoga

According to many studies laughing ones heart out is a truly miracle cure that can relieve stress, boost the immune system, increase blood flow, release endorphins, protect the heart and so much more. Studies have found the health benefits exist even with fake or pretend laughter as it often leads to real laughter after just a short time (20 minutes of laughter is sufficient to develop full physiological benefits). After practising uncontrollable laughter for a while it becomes a habit of our mind, enabling us to laugh our way out of all life’s issues.  Even after one session many followers have found a difference in their lives, like a great burden of emotion has fallen.

Laughter is easily created within a gathering of people when there is eye contact combined with childlike playfulness and laughing exercises. Fake laughter quickly turns in genuine hearty real laughing. This unique and amazing for of Yoga brings more oxygen to the body and brain by incorporating yogic breathing which results in deep diaphragmatic breathes purging old stale air and rejuvenating us with lots of new fresh air.

Suitable for the old, young, male, female, religions, atheist and pretty much everyone, this method does not on humour, jokes or comedy. It does not matter what state of happiness or mind the follower is in, as the laughter will take them out of the doldrums into a euphoric state of a sort of bliss. Laughing starts with a physical exercise (like gentle warm-up techniques which include stretching, chanting, clapping and body movement)  with all group members looking at each other. Breathing exercises are also used to prepare the lungs for laughter. Suddenly one or more members will start to giggle than laugh out loud. Soon the pretend becomes real and contagious. Within no time, everyone is laughing and enjoying in the release of stress and built up emotion.

The session ends with “Laughter Meditation (unstructured laughter)” where participants sit or lie down and allow natural laughter to flow from within their beings like a fountain; it’s a powerful experience that can lead to healthy emotional catharsis and a feeling of release/joyousness that can last for many days.

Is laughter Yoga effective? Yes and no! Yes, it brings health and wellness. But no because it can only help us up to a certain level. For those that need it, it works magic. But you may find after a while you seek something higher, that connects us with the Divine. Laughter and being child-like does connect us, perhaps not quite like most spiritual practitioners would like.
